Over the past year, I had the incredible opportunity to join the AMO team at the University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research, under the leadership of Professor Jason Roberts. As an Associate Professor in Clinical Pharmacology from Nantes, France, this experience formed part of my one-year academic mobility, which I undertook together with my family.
Moving to Australia was a major step, and it turned out to be an unforgettable adventure for both children and adults. The warmth and generosity of the team made the transition smooth and welcoming. I was immediately struck by the team’s energy, high level of organisation, and the scientific excellence that underpins their work.
Throughout the year, I was able to deepen my expertise in pharmacokinetic modeling, exploring tools and approaches that were new to me, particularly in the field of population pharmacokinetics. My research focused on various aspects of antibiotic optimization, with a particular emphasis on long half-life antibiotics - a topic of growing clinical relevance.
One of the highlights of my time here was witnessing how the team seamlessly bridges fundamental and translational research. From high-impact clinical studies, such as those on continuous infusion strategies, to cutting-edge in vitro models like the hollow fiber infection model, the AMO team is at the forefront of antibiotic PK-PD science. Being part of such a dynamic and internationally connected environment has been incredibly enriching, both scientifically and personally.
Beyond the research, I met truly inspiring people from all over the world, contributing to a positive, collaborative, and supportive atmosphere. I leave with not only new knowledge and collaborations, but also lasting friendships.
I would highly recommend this kind of academic mobility experience to anyone considering it. It requires planning and preparation - particularly when relocating with a family - but the professional and personal rewards are absolutely worth it.
This year has been an exceptional journey, and I look forward to continuing to collaborate with the team in the future. My sincere thanks to everyone who made this time so special.
