My time at UQCCR with Jason Roberts and the team has been, by all accounts, an unconventional and incredibly rewarding journey. Unlike the typical visiting student or early-career post-doc, I joined from a different perspective: as a clinician in the later stages of my career. My goal wasn't just to hide away in a lab, but to use this sabbatical to bridge the gap between clinical practice and world-class research on antimicrobial optimization.
During my stay, I saw first hand why this group stays at the top of their field. Your prestige isn't just about the data you produce; it’s a reflection of a shared sense of purpose, a rigorous way of working, and, above all, a solid set of values.
The team welcomed me with incredible generosity. I felt like an integral part of your projects from day one, experiencing a level of professional openness that is rare in such competitive circles. I was also lucky enough to meet Marta—my favorite Catalan—a tireless, brilliant, and generous colleague with whom my wife and I have built a wonderful friendship. She introduced Linna and me to the pharmacological behavior of the antibiotics we use daily in our ICUs, allowing us to share our own "bedside" experience with patients and invasive devices. Beyond the clinical work, it was also a lot of fun brainstorming names for our upcoming joint research studies. We took it as seriously as naming a new family member, trying to find that perfect balance—and I think we nailed it without sounding silly. I'm especially glad that we've gone from the first study, "No-Smart," to our latest one, "Be-Smart."
But the experience went far beyond the office. Your hospitality made my downtime unforgettable, from exploring the breathtaking rainforests to diving into Australia’s vibrant sports culture. I’ll never forget the footy and cricket matches, the hikes, and those bittersweet farewells we shared as people come and go.
I’m leaving with a deep sense of gratitude and a wealth of memories. I’ve jokingly told the team that I might be your "lucky charm," since my stay coincided with a massive winning streak for the Broncos, the Lions, and the Aussie national teams!
As I head back to my clinical roots, I truly hope that "good luck" sticks with the group. May you continue the groundbreaking work that is so vital for the patients I have dedicated my life to helping. It has been a true honor to walk alongside you.
