National AMR Forum 2019

24 October 2019

Tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most significant global health priorities today.

Most governments in the developed world have recognised the scope of the problem and its potential to “threaten the very core of modern medicine and the sustainability of an effective, global public health response to the enduring threat from infectious diseases” (WHO).

The University of Queensland is proud to be hosting this year’s National AMR Forum – the University’s significant collaboration with the Queensland Government and the National Centre for Antimicrobial Stewardship.

This national meeting will bring together clinicians and researchers from around the country from varied health professions and policy making field.

Our vision for this Forum is to integrate the efforts of different health disciplines and bring about a real and coherent action aimed at optimising the use of our current antimicrobial resources in human and animal medicine and thwarting uncontrolled AMR.

We hope to attract both public and private sector institutions within human health, animal health and agriculture and importantly the members of the public as patients, carers and patient and family advocates.

The attendees will hear from the Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young who will speak about soon-to-be-published Queensland’s own AMR Strategy.

The international keynote will be delivered by Professor Sara Cosgrove, Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, Maryland and a world leader in epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance outcomes.

Preceding the Forum, we are delivering a series of workshops with focus on genomics, new drug discovery, antimicrobial stewardship implementation strategies, general practice AMR and veterinary workshop on developing and using antimicrobial prescribing guidelines.

There is no better campus to host this multidisciplinary meeting than here at the RBWH which provides an impressive confluence of clinical leadership and research capability.
