Paul is a Research Fellow, UQCCR in the Antimicrobial Optimisation Group and Assistant Director of Pharmacy (Clinical) Sunshine Coast University Hospital. After completing his Bachelor of Pharmacy at The University of Queensland in 2006, Paul worked in various settings across Queensland and New Zealand. With a background as a clinical pharmacist, his primary experience lies in Intensive Care. This challenging and rewarding role provided Paul with first-hand experience in optimising antibiotic therapy for critically ill patients. Additionally, Paul joined the ICU research group to learn from experienced researchers and actively participate in research. This experience ignited Paul's passion for learning and highlighted the crucial role of research in advancing healthcare, inspiring him to contribute to society through research.
Paul is set to complete his PhD in early 2025. Under the supervision and mentorship of Professor Jason Roberts, his thesis focuses on optimising antibiotic dosing for critically ill patients, specifically beta-lactams and vancomycin. It includes an international survey of dosing and monitoring, development and evaluation of a dosing guideline, and assessment of dosing software's predictive performance.
Within his role at the CRE RESPOND Antimicrobial Optimisation Group, Paul’s current project is Defining Antibiotic Levels in Intensive Care Patients II (DALI-II). DALI-II is a multi-national pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic cohort study to determine whether contemporary antibiotic dosing for critically ill patients achieves therapeutic exposures. DALI-II will be conducted within the ICUs of over 70 participating institutions across six continents. Paul is grateful for this opportunity to work on such an important project and to learn from the vastly experienced CRE RESPOND team and diverse international collaborators. He is thankful to be a recipient of a Queensland Health Clinical Research Fellowship to support this work.
For Paul, a research pathway offers many unique opportunities, challenges, and experiences. The culture and support of CRE RESPOND and the wider research network have made this career pathway truly enjoyable. His advice to others is that a research pathway will offer endless learning opportunities and a diverse range of experiences. If you are passionate, self-motivated, inquisitive, and resilient, research offers a great career opportunity.
Outside of work, you will find Paul out running or exploring mountains. This hobby has been an incredibly important way for Paul to prioritise self-care and maintain a balanced life.
