Visiting student - Dr Cemre Boşnak

19 Dec 2024

Hello everyone,

Let me start by introducing myself. My name is Cemre Boşnak, and I am a 5th-year resident in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology at Hacettepe University Hospital, one of Turkey’s most prestigious universities. My primary area of interest is antimicrobial resistance, which naturally led me to develop an enthusiasm for PK/PD (pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics). After conducting extensive research, I was highly motivated to visit UQCCR, and this aspiration became a reality.

UQCCR graciously hosted me as an observer for two months, from August to September 2024. Even before my visit, I had access to an incredible team who guided me through all organizational aspects, ensuring a smooth transition. From my very first day, I was welcomed with warmth and kindness, and throughout my stay, I felt less like a visitor and more like a valued member of the team.

Although two months is a relatively short time to fully benefit from such a renowned center, the meticulously planned schedule allowed me to make the most of it. The first two weeks were dedicated to a comprehensive introductory tour, during which I visited all the departments and familiarized myself with the diverse activities and research conducted at UQCCR. After this orientation phase, I shifted my focus entirely to my primary area of interest: the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of antimicrobials.

Throughout my stay, several individuals played pivotal roles in enriching my experience. Professor Jason Roberts regularly monitored my progress and provided invaluable mentorship. Dr Patty Mitre and Dr Matthieu Gregoire generously shared their expertise in PK/PD, while Dr Abdullah Tarık Aslan offered deep insights into antimicrobial resistance and laboratory techniques. Dr Fekade Sime and Dr Hafiz Abdul-Aziz were endlessly patient with my numerous questions, always eager to help. Dr Steven Wallis and Dr Charlene Wu provided me with a solid foundation in practical biochemistry, which will be instrumental in designing my future projects. And last but certainly not least, Louise Godfrey was always available to assist with any queries or challenges I encountered.

These two months were truly invaluable, both professionally and personally. The structured program and supportive environment allowed me to focus deeply on my research interests while gaining insights from some of the best minds in the field. I am deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to making this experience so fulfilling. Thank you for your generosity, guidance, and warm hospitality.
