A Memorable Visit to UQCCR: Knowledge, Collaboration, and Inspiration

18 Dec 2025

In July 2025, I had the opportunity to visit the Antimicrobial Optimisation research team led by Professor Jason Roberts at The UQ Centre for Clinical Research (UQCCR). I had really wanted to reach Professor Jason Roberts’ team for at least a year, but a lot of troubles occurred which prevented me from getting there at that time. I currently work at the University of Milan and at the Infectious Diseases Department of Luigi Sacco Hospital, Milan, Italy.

I initiated a discussion with Professor Roberts about a project based on a dataset I had previously collected as part of my research on therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) in people who use drugs. A colleague and friend of mine, Dr Camilla Genovese, went to Brisbane as well, before me, working on the same project. Professor Roberts generously invited both of us to join the group for a research stay, offering an invaluable chance to deepen our understanding of population pharmacokinetics and PK/PD principles.

Before my arrival in Brisbane, Professor Roberts put Camilla and me in contact with Dr Marta Ulldemolins, who kindly agreed to act as my supervisor during the visit.

With her support, I was able to prepare and refine my dataset in advance, ensuring that my time at UQCCR would be as productive and focused as possible! The team welcomed me warmly and made me feel part of the group right away. Under Marta’s guidance, I worked on the development of a population model. I also had the chance to attend a workshop taught by Dr Patty Mitre, which helped contextualize my project.

The entire experience not only enhanced my skills in PK/PD and population modelling, but also inspired several potential research projects that I hope to pursue in the near future!

Beyond the scientific aspects, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Australia. Working closely with such a dynamic and supportive team was truly rewarding, and Professor Jason Roberts stands out as an exceptional mentor—brilliant and generous! Finally, I returned to Milan with new knowledge, new collaborations, and wonderful memories.
